Hiking Doesn’t Mean You Have to Give Up Your Favourite Cup of Coffee!

My husband and I love our morning coffee. Actually my husband loves coffee at any time of day but we used to give it up on our backpacking trips to avoid the bulk and weight of taking along a coffee press which is really messy to clean up anyway. And then along came the Starbucks…

My husband and I love our morning coffee. Actually my husband loves coffee at any time of day but we used to give it up on our backpacking trips to avoid the bulk and weight of taking along a coffee press which is really messy to clean up anyway.

And then along came the Starbucks instant singles. Admittedly I do like Starbucks coffee, my husband is more the Tim Horton's type. And when I saw these little gems available in Starbucks last year I was pretty skeptical. How on earth could instant coffee taste delicious to a self proclaimed coffee connoisseur?

Now, I do not believe that Starbucks even thought of us backpackers and campers when they came up with this amazing creation but I have to tell you that one sip and we were sold! I mean, there we were, sitting on the top of a mountain boiling water for breakfast. Pour some of that boiling water into our mugs, pour in the individually packaged coffee, stir and enjoy that ahhh moment! The coffee is dissected right into the hot water. There are no coffee grounds to clean up, no coffee press to take with you and clean just plain and simple great coffee.

This year I've noticed that they have added flavored coffee to their single and portable collection of their Hiker's Coffee. (OK, that's my term for their VIA single coffee line, it was just made for us though). And this gets me excited to try them all while on the top of a mountain. Coffee seems to taste much better out in the wide open spaces of nature.

We have of course met up with several other hikers who haul up coffee presses and have to clean them out and quite frankly it's a hassle. We have been introducing all the hikers we can to these wonderful gems and would like to thank Starbucks for this great creation of their souls whether or not they ever had us in mind.

Coffee drinkers take note: Hiking and coffee drinking has just become a much simpler and tastier partnership with new flavors to enjoy while out in the backcountry.

And not to cast a negative shadow on tea drinkers as we do love our cup of green tea every evening, but to know that you can wake up in your tent and quickly prep a cup of hot, delicious coffee without any fuss is quite exciting.

If you're not a Starbuck's coffee drinker, it's worth checking out and trying, if only for their Hiker's Coffee.

Happy Hiking!
